Oral Examinations

Regular, twice yearly oral exams give your dentist the opportunity to spot oral health issues early and create a plan to treat them before they become more serious.

Oral exams at SouthWest Dental include a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, jaw and bite, as well as any dental x-rays, oral cancer screening and other diagnostic procedures which may be required to help your dentist diagnose and treat any oral health issues you may have.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer can affect any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues. At each exam, your dentist will check your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer which are difficult to detect with the naked eye.

Oral Health Care at Home

A good at-home oral hygiene routine is essential for keeping your mouth healthy between appointments. Brushing twice a day for two minutes each time, and flossing at least once a day will help to keep your smile healthy and bright.

Hygiene Cleaning

Before or after your exam, your dental hygienist will provide a deep cleaning of your teeth and gums to prevent and treat disease.

At each cleaning your hygienist will use a scaler to remove any tartar and plaque build-up before using a polisher and coarse toothpaste to remove any leftover stains or plaque. To ensure that your smile is as clean as possible, your hygienist will finish with a thorough flossing of your teeth and gums.

Fluoride Treatment

We provide fluoride treatment for adults and children who are at high risk of developing tooth decay. Fluoride is a natural mineral commonly used in dentistry to help rebuild the minerals in tooth enamel to prevent or reverse tooth decay.
