What is Dental Sedation?

Dental sedation encompasses a range of techniques and medications that can be used to help make patients more comfortable during dental procedures. Our dentists can work with you to determine whether dental sedation is right for you.

We do everything we can to help anxious and nervous patients feel relaxed during their dental appointments. In addition to offering sedative medications, we will work at your pace, take breaks whenever you need them, and provide calm reassurance as needed.

Our team of dental professionals includes an onsite anesthesiologist to help our patients get the treatment they require in a comfortable and stress-free manner.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask placed over the mouth and nose. The medication calms patients but allows them to remain awake and able to communicate. Nitrous oxide may also help to lessen anxiety, increase pain threshold, reduce gag reflex and make time pass more quickly.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedatives are pills or liquids prescribed by your dentist. These medications are taken orally in advance of a the dental appointment. Oral sedation leaves you awake for the procedure, but produces a calming effect to significantly relax you.

IV Sedation

IV sedatives are administered directly into the bloodstream through the vein for the deepest level of sedation without general anesthesia. Our dental team will attach you to a monitor so that we can keep track of vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure and oxygen levels during the procedure.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is a controlled state of unconsciousness that eliminates awareness, movement and discomfort during dental treatment. Complex treatments can be completed in a single appointment while you sleep. This option is available through the Yarmouth Regional Hospital or South Shore Regional Hospital.
